Kilkenny College Strikes a Chord: New Arts & Music Building

Challenge: Kilkenny College, renowned for its artistic and musical spirit, needed a dedicated space to nurture these talents. However, their vision required not just aesthetics, but also a sustainable and efficient building.

Solution: KPH partnered with the college to construct a brand-new, standalone arts and music building. This involved installing a cutting-edge heating system with a dedicated plant room serving low-surface temperature (LST) radiators. Water services were optimised with an exhaust air heat pump, creating a more energy-saving system. This innovative solution also boosted hot and cold water services for toilets and sinks throughout the building.

Sustainable Solutions:

  • Energy Efficiency: The combined exhaust air heat pump and LST radiators minimized energy consumption, reducing the school’s environmental footprint and operational costs.
  • Improved Ventilation: A state-of-the-art MVHR (Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery) system provided fresh air circulation, enhancing indoor air quality and student well-being.
  • Future-Proof Design: A new underground gas line connected the existing plant room to the new building, ensuring flexibility for future expansion.
  • Smart Integration: A centralized Building Management System (BMS) seamlessly integrated with the existing school system, enabling efficient control and monitoring of the building’s energy performance.
